Here are some phrases and paragraphs for use in your publicity material, or as speaking points during an interview:
"Story Tsunami" is a wave of storytelling benefit concerts for the victims of the December 26, 2004 earthquake and tsunami in Asia. The idea is to create a wave of love and compassion in response to the wave of devastation.
The concerts will include professional and amateur storytellers, telling stories from Sumatra, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, the Maldives, Andaman, and Nicobar Islands, and Somalia.
Four relief agencies have been selected to receive funds, based on their high ratio of program vs administrative expense, and for their commitment to long term recovery that is culturally appropriate. Those agencies are: Mercy Corps, Oxfam, Save the Children, and the American Red Cross.
Story Tsunami is modeled after "Tellabration!" which takes place each year in November. Founded by J.G. Pinkerton, and produced by the National Storytelling Network, this event has been introducing new adult audiences to the delights of storytelling since 1988. In 2003, there were 300 Tellabration events in 42 states and 10 other countries.
Story Tsunami asks the question, "What if we held a "Tellabration" style event in about six to eight weeks, all over the country, featuring stories from those nations that are in need, to raise cash for relief?"
